Following in Diddy’s footsteps, The Game has put up a good amount of money towards the Flint, Mich. water crisis. In collaboration with his charity, The Robin Hood Project, and a Michigan water company, the 35-year-old Compton rapper donated $1 million ($500,000 of his own money) to provide clean water for the city’s residents.
In making his announcement on Instagram yesterday (Jan. 26), Game called out Madonna and Jimmy Fallon for smaller $10,000 donations. He later explained that it wasn’t meant to shame Madonna or Fallon, but feels the particular crisis deserves more attention.
Though she is charitable, Madge is a worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Game noted. “$10,000 was sort of a joke to me,” he told TMZ Live on a break from touring in Europe. “If we’re gonna donate some water, lets donate some water.”
As the donations trickle in, the city of predominately Black residents, is finally getting help to a two-year public health calamity largely ignored in the media until recently.
The situation stems from 2014, when Flint switched water sources to save money. However, aging pipes resulted in lead contamination, damages of which could be irreversible. To add insult to injury, Flint is still charging residents for contaminated water.
The city’s crisis could cost an estimated $1.5 billion to fix.
