Over the weekend, a scheduled rally held by the Ku Klux Klan was met with violence after protesters clashed with the hate group. The skirmish between the opposing forces left five people injured, one seriously, and 13 others arrested.

As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the KKK rally was held in Anaheim, Calif. on Saturday (Feb. 27) and was a publicly filed “walking protest” in the city’s Pearson Park region. Around 30 counterprotesters met KKK members at their rally and clashes broke out for a block with reports that they initially began the attack.

Three protesters were stabbed, with witnesses saying the most seriously injured person was stabbed with a pole bearing the Confederate Flag. A Klansmen being led away in handcuffs yelled out that he stabbed someone in self-defense after the counterprotesters allegedly attacked the KKK.

From the Times:

Witnesses said the Klansmen used the point of a flagpole as a weapon while fighting with protesters.

Two other protesters were stabbed during the melee — one with a knife and the other with an unidentified weapon, said Sgt. Daron Wyatt of the Anaheim Police Department.

Brian Levin, director of Cal State San Bernardino’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, said he was standing near the KKK members when several protesters attacked them with two-by-fours and other weapons.

Several of the Klan members jumped in the SUV and sped off, leaving three others to “fend for themselves,” Levin said.

The newspaper further adds that the Klan protesters were part of the Loyal White Knights, an offshoot group that rallies against illegal immigration, street crime and other issues. Anaheim is reportedly a hub for the hate group and other related sects of the Klan. The Loyal White Knights do not wear robes and instead look to former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke as an inspiration.

CNN reports that six male and one female member of the attacking protesters were arrested. In comparison, five male and one female member of the Ku Klux Klan group were arrested. Five of the individuals were released after a review of video from witnesses. Charges are still pending for the remaining jailed persons.
