Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore “kept it 100” during his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and the White House is glad that he did.

While President Obama earned a couple of headlines this weekend for literally dropping the mic at the end of his last White House Correspondents’ dinner, Wilmore stole the show at the elite dinner when he congratulated President Obama in becoming the first African-American president, twice. He used words, or rather, one word that many Black people have probably used in their homes or at the barbershop to endear the President, but never in front of the world, i.e. “White folks.”

Wilmore closed his monologue by turning to the leader of the free world and saying, “Yo, Barry. You did it my n*gga.”

While people in the crowd and on the internet were obviously at a loss for words over the remark, the White House insists that the President took the compliment in stride.

Per NY Mag:

But the president himself wasn’t troubled by the remark. On Monday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said he had spoken with Obama about the joke and the president “said that he appreciated the spirit of the sentiments that Mr. Wilmore expressed.”

“I take Mr. Wilmore at his words that he found that to be a powerful transformation just in his lifetime, and something he seemed to be pretty obviously proud of,” Earnest added.

At least this is an instance where the White House is actually ok with someone calling the President out his name.
