Jay Z and his wife, Beyoncé, have been incredibly woke of late in the wake of the police officer-involved shooting deaths of several Black men last week. The Brooklyn rap legend showed more of his political and cultural awareness by posting a “Songs for Survival” playlist on TIDAL over the weekend.

It has been a grueling week for many since last week’s holiday weekend, with the deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and Alva Braziel occurring days within each other. Jay Z and his better half both made public gestures via music and visual statements on social media. However, the playlist was as bold a stance Jay has ever taken in regards to social matters.

From Billboard:

Over the weekend, Jay doubled down, posting a playlist called “Songs for Survival,” featuring 24 songs of hope, survival, struggle and love. The list mixes classic protest tracks such as Curtis Mayfield’s “We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue,” Nina Simone’s “Four Women,” Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)” and Gil Scott Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not be Televised” with modern songs about struggle such as Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright,” Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam,” Common’s “Forever Begins” and Outkast’s “Vibrate.”

Among the other tracks on the playlist: Stevie Wonder (“Village Ghetto Land,” “Love’s in Need of Love Today”), Fela Kuti (“Zombie”), Bob Marley (“War,” “Redemption Song”), James Brown (“Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud”) and Mos Def (“UMI Says”).
