You should know that Hip-Hop started out in The Bronx, but what about the period just before? That’s part of the premise of Baz Luhrmann’s forthcoming Netflix original series The Get Down, and its official trailer should make it a must see.
The music driven drama is set in 1977 in The Bronx, and is a fun filled and at times action packed nostalgia trip. Viewers will see Disco fall by the wayside and Hip-Hop’s come up via high school crushes, gang fights, graf and more. In case you’re wondering if the culture will be repped properly, Nas and Grandmaster Flash are on board as executive producers, with noted author and OG Hip-Hop critic Nelson George also holding it down as a supervision producer.
The cast includes Shameik Moore (“Shaolin Fantastic”), who you should recognize from DOPE, Justice Smith (“Ezekiel ‘Books’ Figuero”), Herizen Guardiola (“Mylene Cruz”), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Cadillac”), Jaden Smith (“Dizzee Kipling”), Mamoudou Athie (“Grandmaster Flash”), Jimmy Smits (“Francisco ‘Papa Fuerte’ Cruz”), Giancarlo Esposito (“Ramon Cruz”) and more.
The writer of this post got a sneak peak at the series and it is official with a whistle. In fact, the trailer is damn good, but doesn’t nearly give it justice.
