Rae Sremmurd‘s sophomore album just came out Friday [August 12], but we’re already hearing that the group’s more popular member Swae Lee has a solo project in the works.

In their feature interview with Complex, the duo talked about shaking the sophomore jinx and focusing on continuing to have fun despite that people actually have hit-making expectations for them now.

Their 2015 debut Sremmlife surprised a lot of people with how enjoyable the songs were. The album wound up having five singles released and went on to go platinum thanks to both physical copies sold and streams.

After many delays, Sremmlife 2 finally dropped this week, but has not released any big radio smashes. The duo does have a tour to look forward to this fall, but they are also apparently looking at solo projects as well.

Swae Lee, the most recognizable member who is credited with coming up with the melodies as well as crafting the hook for Beyonce’s “Formation” revealed that he has been recording solo material and may drop it soon.

He says:

“[It’s] a retarded project called Swaecation. I have eight songs right now that i feel like are candidates for the project, but I gotta make sure they’re all up to par.”

Of course, his fans are happy to hear that. They’ve been salivating for it since he shined on the first album. But his brother and rap partner Slim Jxmmi isn’t as enthused about it. He doesn’t hate that Swae is making solo music, because he is making some himself as well. But he is bothered by the growing demand for it from fans as well as music industry people.

He says that, “The whole industry going to do shit to separate us. We got separate tracks, because we can both rap.”

Rae Sremmurd isn’t the first rap group to come to this crossroads. It’s almost like a rite of passage for successful rap groups to go through “you should go solo” talks.

Why is that? Why can’t Hip Hop fans just enjoy groups together? It’s not always guaranteed that a solo album is going to be dope. Sometimes what makes one member appear to be so dope is because their partner provides the balance and the extra hand needed to carry an entire song and album.
