Carmelo Anthony‘s former Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim served up some sour milk as Melo sips champagne after winning another Olympic gold medal. He says the NBA superstar will never win an NBA title.

When Carmelo Anthony‘s career ends he will go down in the history books as the only player to ever win a college championship and three Olympic gold medals in basketball. But there may always be one gaping hole on his resume, no NBA championship.

Melo‘s former college coach pointed out the obvious at a press conference recently and tried his best to be tactful, but it still came out sounding pretty bad. Boeheim has also coached Melo on those three gold medal winning Olympic teams he’s played on.

On a video, Boeheim can be heard saying:

“He’s unlikely to win an NBA title. He’s never been on a team that even had a remote chance of winning an NBA title. As a player, all you can do is try to make your team better and every team he’s been on he’s made them a lot better. Denver hadn’t done anything prior to him getting there and he took them into the playoffs. They weren’t going to beat the Lakers or the Spurs. In those years, they won the championship most of the time.”

Sounds harsh but it is true. The closest Carmelo ever got to an NBA Championship was in 2009 when he led the Denver Nuggets to the Western Conference Finals but were defeated by Kobe Bryant and the Lakers, who went on to win the championship. As a New York Knick he has never got past the second round.
