Amy Schumer has become a popular comic and leading voice in the modern feminist movement, but that hasn’t stopped her from making problematic statements from her public perch. Last week in light of Lena Dunham‘s Odell Beckham struggle, Schumer suggested in a tweet that men of color sexually harass and cat call women more than white men.

As reported by Mic.com, Schumer replied to a tweet from Twitter user @plbds which spoke about Dunham’s assessment of why Beckham didn’t fawn over her as a sexual object as to suggest that’s all he’s good for. The user wrote that women like Dunham and Schumer often put the unsavory mantle of misogyny on the heads of Black men and other men of color before they would a white man.

From Mic.com:

“Lena Dunham, Amy Schumer, et. al refuse to see that misogyny among men of color, while hideously prevalent, is no more so than among white men,” wrote Paulo L dos Santo on Friday.

In a now-deleted tweet, Schumer responded, “How would you know? Statistically who is hollerin’ at you in the street more, pa?”

With only one retweet and two likes, Schumer had likely realized the implications of her tweet — that men of color catcall, harass women and are altogether more misogynistic than white men — pretty quickly, and deleted it.

While Schumer might have thought the quick delete would save her from criticism, Twitter caught wind of Mic.com’s story and began blasting both women for their sexist and harmful stances. In times past, however, Schumer has toyed with jokes that border or cross the lines of racism but shrugged it off as simple jokes despite the fact that as a celebrity her words hold lots of power.

Schumer is catching a slight bit of hell on Twitter for her reply, but it’s perhaps moot to try and hope that she actually understood the gravity of her assumption.
