Gloria Naylor, writer of the best-selling book The Women Of Brewster Place, which eventually became a television miniseries, has died. She was 66. 

Per the Associated Press, Naylor’s death was confirmed by Cara Reilly, who works at the literary agency Sterling Lord Literistic. No other details about Naylor’s death were provided at this time.

The Women of Brewster Place, about seven African-American women scraping and surviving in a housing project, was published in 1982, acclaimed by The New York Times and won the National Book Award for best first fiction.

Naylor was born in New York City, earned her B.A. from Brooklyn College and a Masters degree from Yale University. Other works by Naylor include Bailey’s Cafe and Mama Day.

A number of famed authors, fans and celebs took to Twitter to offer their condolences and pay homage.
