Che “Rhymefest” Smith has been a vocal proponent for peace in his beloved hometown of Chicago, despite being on the other end of a robbery recently. Rhymefest held a gun violence vigil last night (Oct. 9) in the Windy City, hoping to bring to the light changes necessary to stop the deluge of crime in the streets.

Ahead of the vigil, the former Kanye West collaborator spoke with local talk show Windy City Live about the aims of the march and what he hopes to achieve via his Truth and Reconciliation series. The rapper and songwriter got robbed at gunpoint back in August and had a frustrating ordeal with the police in his attempts to seek justice.

Rhymefest called the first vigil a “citywide therapy session” and invited all Chicago natives to get involved in changing the tides. This year alone, 494 people have been shot and killed in the city with dozens more stabbed, adding to a total of 554 murdered.

Rhymefest’s appearance on Windy City Live is featured in the clip below.
