One of the hallmark’s of America’s democracy is the peaceful transfer of power, and accepting humbling defeat. We’ll never know if Donald Trump would have been so gracious, but Hillary Clinton‘s concession speech and Barack Obama’s promise of smoothly making way for the president-elect will go down in history.

Clinton was clearly disappointed but asked her followers to keep an open mind. “We must accept this result and look to the future,” she said. “Donald Trump is going to be our president, we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.”

She also added that freedom and worship and expression should be valued and defended, as per the Constitution, too.

Obama, who stated he was proud of Clinton, and stressed that America should be united, regardless of political party.

“We all want what’s best for this country,” said Obama.

See both speeches below.
