During an election night many did not expect, there was the silver lining of California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris getting elected as only the second Black U.S. Senator in history. Among the barriers Ms. Harris has shattered, she is also the first senator of Indian-American descent and the first Black person to represent the state of California.

Kamala Devi Harris was born Oct. 20, 1968 in Oakland, Calif. to a Jamaican father and an Indian mother. Harris’ father was an economics professor at Stanford University while her mother was a breast cancer specialist. After attending Howard University for undergraduate studies, Harris earned a law degree from UCLA’s Hastings College of Law.

Harris’ career thus far has been a series of strong marks, including becoming California’s first woman, Black and Indian person to serve in the role of Attorney General. The win on Tuesday over Rep. Loretta Sanchez came hard fought as longtime incumbent Barbara Boxer announced plans to step down in 2017 at the top of the year. With the win, the Republicans still maintained control of the Senate by way of a 51-47 advantage over Democrats.
