Tupac Shakur will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017. He will be the first solo rap act to have the honor.

As expected the late Tupac Shakur has been voted in to join the class of 2017 at the Rock hall. He will be joined by Joan, Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Pearl Jam and Yes.

‘Pac is just the sixth Hip-Hop act to be enshrined at the hall. The others before him were Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and last year’s inductees, NWA. ‘Pac was voted into the hall in his first year of eligibility.

‘Pac legacy is one the most respected in Hip-Hop. He has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide with his 1996 album All Eyez On Me being one of the few Hip-Hop albums to go diamond, selling over 10 million copies.

Per the Rock & Roll Hall of fame:

Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first recording.  The 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Performer Inductees were chosen by more than 900 voters of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, as well as the aggregate results of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s online fan vote. The top five artists from the fan vote comprised the fans’ ballot that was tallied along with the other ballots to determine the 2017 Inductees.

Tupac was killed 21 years ago, and the last album he was alive to release dropped in 1996, but we are still hearing unreleased verses from him. The most recent coming this past weekend on a rare version of his Thug Life single “How Long Will They Mourn Me?”

Pac’s election poses an interesting question, who will accept the award and how will the performance be handled. His mother Afeni would have been the prime candidate to accept on his behalf, but she passed away earlier this year. We’ve seen a hologram Tupac perform at Coachella, but would it make sense to bring him back for this? NWA did not perform at their induction in 2016, so it would not be a first.

The exhibition featuring the new inductees opens in March 2017. A ticket sale date for the induction event will be announced in the future. This event comes with perfect timing as the highly-anticipated Tupac biopic All Eyez On Me is scheduled to hit theatres next Summer.
