Victoria Soto, the 27-year-old teacher who tried to shield her students from harm when shooter Adam Lanza killed 27 people, last week was has been laid to rest.

Soto’s funeral was held in Stratford, Conn. Wednesday (Dec.19).

Family members wore, green, her favorite color, alongside ribbons in her memory. “Somebody wrote me a letter about the recent tragedy that I would like to share with you,” said Soto’s 24-year-old sister, Jillian. “In it, it said they had to sit down with three small children, explaining to them that monsters sadly do exist out there. But they felt relief that because of my sister, they were able to tell them that superheroes also are very real. You are my superhero.”

During the shooting Soto hid her students in a closet.

Lanza, 20,  is believed to have let off more than 100 rounds in his victims .

Singer Paul Simon performed “The Sound of Silence,” at the ceremony. “She loved to dance, be silly, make people laugh and just do crazy things,” a college roommate recalled.

Many students in the area went back to school earlier in the week, and Sandy Hook students will likely go back to class after the holidays at a new  location.

The first two victims were buried at the start of the week. 6-year-olds Jack Pinto and Noah Pozner were both laid to rest Monday.
