William Spengler, the man who lured firefighters into a trap in Webster, N.Y. before ambushing them on Christmas Eve, left a note explaining that all he’s ever wanted to do was kill people.

Authorities found a typed note Tuesday (Dec. 25) detailing his plans and revealing that he would “do what I like doing best, killing people.”

Aside from the bodies of Spengler and the two firefighters, one of which also worked as a policeman, another set of remains were also uncovered and are believed to be that of the killer’s sister, Cheryl.

Spengler was armed with a .223 caliber Bushmaster rifle, the same weapon as the Connecticut shooter who killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School nearly two weeks ago. A 12 gauge shotgun, and a .38 caliber revolver were also uncovered at the crime scene.

Spengler was an ex-con who served 17 years in prison for manslaughter for bludgeoning his grandmother with a hammer back in 1980.  “He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people,” said Police Chief Gerald Pickering. Although the investigation wasn’t completed it is believed that the two men killed, Police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, and Tomasz Kaczowka, weren’t shot at close range.

Other police at the scene exchanged shots with Spengler before he took his own life.
