A few days ago, Wyclef Jean premiered a new track, titled “Hip-Hop,” during a visit with DJ Self of New York City’s Power 105.1. Finally, a CDQ version of the ode to the culture surfaces. The track plays like a trip down memory lane, paying homage to Hip-Hop and the various artists who’ve allowed it to thrive all these years.
Wyclef also mentions numerous new artists, like A$AP Rocky, Tyler The Creator and Kendrick Lamar, that are doing their due diligence to preserve the culture. Thought provoking lines like “I see molly is the new coc-aine,” bridge the gap between Hip-Hop’s generations and sadly show that old habits may never die. All and all, it’s clear that the Haitian MC’s love for the culture remains tried and true. He even makes mention to his former group, saying “I miss OutKast like people miss the Fugees.”
Interestingly, Wyclef recently took the blame for the trio’s demise.
“Fully looking back then, now as a man and looking back, I definitely take blame having fell for Lauryn at the time. But in my form or artistry and a lot of times we read these stories and we go and read whether its Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell, or even back in the days of mythology with Zeus and whoever he fell for you always think ‘no this is never going to happen to us.’ ”
