The NFC Championship game turned violent when a fight resulted in an Atlanta Falcons fan being stabbed as a crowd left the Georgia Super Dome, Sunday (Jan. 20).

According to witnesses, the victim was stabbed in the neck after punching a San Francisco 49ers fan, who in turn pulled out a knife.

Neither party has been identified but the injured party was transported to a local hospital. The condition of the victim is not yet known.

Today’s game resulted in a 28-24 Falcons defeat, sending the 49ers to the Super Bowl for the first time in more than 15 years. They will face off against the Baltimore Ravens who beat the New England Patriots to win the AFC Championship, 28-13.

Instances of violence among overly emotional sports fans is nothing new. In August of 2011, a San Francisco Giants fan was brutally beaten at a game between the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bryan Stow was left with “evidence of brain injury and dysfunction” after he was attacked. The then 42-year-old of Santa Cruz, Calif. suffered a severe skull fracture and bruising to his frontal lobe. He was placed in a coma, and had the entire left side of his brain removed in order to relieve pressure off his brain.
