LL Cool J invited Oprah Winfrey to his home to tape an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter.

Despite speaking about the rapper’s transition from Hip-Hop’s first s*x symbol into a family man and television star, James Todd Smith spoke for the first time about dealing with a home invasion that occurred last summer. The unarmed intruder broke into LL’s home and the brawl resulted in the intruder’s jaw and nose.

“It was one of those things that leaves a stain on your soul,” LL told Oprah in the interview.  “You dip your toe in the water that’s on the other side, you don’t know what you’ll do to protect your family until you are put in that position. The desire to protect what you have becomes so strong that you go somewhere else. You become another person.”

“Anybody who is put in that position who really wants to take care of their family would’ve done what I did,” he continued. “Once I subdued him and had him under control and was waiting for police to arrive, what I was thinking was ‘do I have to finish this guy off and check around the rest of the house? Cause what if he has somebody with him?’ Those are the thoughts that people don’t think about.”
