The NRA’s CEO Wayne LaPierre remained on the offensive against President Barack Obama’s gun control legislation in an appearance on FOX News Sunday this weekend. In a revealing moment of pushback, LaPierre got checked with criticism over a recent ad that involved President Obama’s daughters.
LaPierre’s become a fixture in the gun control debate, ever since Obama’s legislative move was introduced in the wake of the Newtown tragedy in December. But on FOX News Sunday, host Chris Wallace hurled a barb towards LaPierre after asking if the NRA regretted making the controversial ad that mentioned the President’s children being protected by armed guards.
“The point of the ad was this: it wasn’t picking on the President’s kids,” said LaPierre. “The President’s kids are safe, and we’re all thankful for it.”
LaPierre was defiant and attempted to defend the ad, to which Chris Wallace became incensed in his response. “You really think that the president’s children are the same kind of target as every other school child in America?” Wallace said. “That’s ridiculous and you know it, sir.”
LaPierre fired back with, “I think there are parents all over the country that think their kids are entitled to the same amount of protection when they go to school. It’s ridiculous, Chris, for all the elites, for all that powerful and privileged and the titans industry to send their kids to schools where there’s armed security.”
Wallace shut it down, saying that the NRA has turned the gun debate into a class argument. Although FOX News is typically not a friendly media zone for Obama and his policies, it was telling that LaPierre’s rants were cut down by the very machine that routinely pumps out questionable rhetoric.
