It wouldn’t be a stretch to think that the Navy SEAL Team 6 members responsible for killing wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden in 2011 got rewarded handsomely for their efforts. According to an exclusive interview from the soldier who fired the fatal shots into bin Laden, life as a civilian has been a struggle.
Esquire magazine nabbed the exclusive interview with the man simply referred to as “The Shooter” in the piece. A 16-year Navy veteran, the Shooter joined the armed services after a failed relationship as a teenager. Although hailed for his heroics in several other missions, it appears that the government has failed to take care of own of its own.
“They [SEAL command] told me they could get me a job driving a beer truck in Milwaukee,” said the Shooter. However, the soldier was reluctant to put his wife and children through the ordeal. “We’d lose everything,” he added.
Although the Shooter and his fellow unnamed SEAL Team 6 members have attempted an unspecified business arrangement, it hasn’t been as fruitful as ST6 member Matt Bissonnette who authored the book No Easy Day.
Despite his service and the damage done to his body, the Shooter is soon to retire without promise of a pension, protection for him and his family and has to shell out $500 for healthcare. The Shooter didn’t appear bitter and he summed up his role in war history in a simple way. “I’m not religious, but I always felt I was put on the earth to do something specific,” said the Shooter. “After that mission, I knew what it was.”
