On Tuesday (Feb. 26) morning, a dismembered human body was found in trash bags and a duffel bag by a man walking his dog in the Bronx. NYPD launched investigation, honing in on the female victim’s 23-year-old son as the lead suspect. The man, Bashid McLean, later admitted to police that he committed the gruesome crime.

McLean, a Bronx native, was taken in for questioning in connection to the murder of 45-year-old Tanya Byrd. One of Byrd’s relatives reported her missing on Tuesday morning according to a New York Times report, which prompted detectives to follow up on the matter. Further, McLean called the sister of Byrd, Cassandra McLean of Washington, and said that his mother had not reported for work on Monday.

Investigators entered Byrd’s department and determined that the dismembering took place there after discovering a wealth of evidence. Media accounts are conflicting with the Times reporting that cops found a box and saw inside the apartment. The New York Post reported that a handsaw was discovered along with bleach and other cleaning supplies.

McLean’s aunt said to the Post that her nephew was “crazy” but didn’t believe he was the person who killed her sister. Ms. McClean also added that her sister had a 6-year-old son who had Down ’s syndrome. Neighbors of Byrd’s said in reports that fighting was often heard coming from the apartment.
