A friendly punching game caused the death of a 15-year-old Missouri student late last week. Marquez Oliver, died after he was punched in the chest by a friend during a lunchtime play fight.

Oliver was a student at Normandy High School and passed out during the incident. Witnesses say that he told the friend that punched him, “Oh yeah, I can take that. That didn’t hurt.”

He collapsed moments later. The teen eventually regained consciousness once in an ambulance but was dead by 6:30 p.m. that evening.

Police concluded that there was no foul play involved. “It was a game, and they would run up and one would punch the other one in the chest and run off,” said Wellston Police Chief G. Thomas Walker.

“Apparently the victim from what we are hearing had punched the other student yesterday and he said ‘I will get you when I see you next time. I will get you!’ And apparently he just saw him standing in the hallway and ran up and hit him and I guess he wasn’t prepared for it.”

Normandy Principal Calvin Nicholas sent a heartfelt letter extending his “deepest sympathy” to the family of the young victim

Oliver did not suffer from any known health issues.

Authorities are still determining whether or not the boy’s friend should be charged in the incident.
