Chicago’s gun violence has claimed the life of yet another 15-year-old, killed near the home of President Obama. In addition to the fatality, at least nine others injured during a string of overnight shootouts in the Windy City Monday (April 22).

The youngster, Cornelius German, was gunned down four blocks from the commander in chief’s Chicago residence. His passing marks the second time a high schooler has been shot near the location this year, the first being 15-year-old Hadiya Pendelton.

German was shot in the back as he stood on the corner of the 700 block of East 50th Street. His mother  and her husband were waiting to pick him up less than a block away. “I kept telling my husband, ‘I don’t feel right,'” Timika Rutledge-German said.

She sent a text message to the boy telling him to walk home, and later saw police filling the area. An officer confirmed that her son was killed. “I knew it was my baby because I saw his shoes, and I saw his jacket. And I know it was him ’cause I had just bought the shoes and the jacket.”

According to police spokesperson John Mirabelli, the deceased was a gang member, but the motive behind the shooting had not yet been confirmed, nor have any arrests been made.

Nine others were hit during separate shootings starting Monday evening, and into the next morning. Among the injured, were four men ages 19, 30, 32, and 34 –all struck by a single gunman at around 4:15 p.m.. They were taken to local hospitals and have all been listed in stable condition.

Four hours later a 20-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, and a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg.

Police are investigating the shootings.
