A huge cheating scandal wasn’t enough to lampoon Mark Sanford’s political dreams. The ex-governor — who made headlines for visiting his side piece in South America– won back his old congressional seat in South Carolina’s First District Tuesday (May 7).

Sanford beat opponent Elizabeth Colbert Busch (sister of Comedy Central host, Steven Colbert) by more than 9 percent. During his victory celebration, the 53-year-old thanked the “angels” who helped inspire his congressional bid, and gave props to a higher power. “I just want to acknowledge a God not just of second chances, but of third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth chances … because that’s the reality of our shared humanity,” he said.

Back in 2009 Sanford went missing for nearly a week, prompting his wife to investigate. As it turned out, Sanford wasn’t missing but spending time with his mistress in Argentina. The scandal resulted in him stepping down as governor, and getting divorced.

Today Sanford and the former jumpoff, María Belén Chapur, are engaged.
