Among the few artists we can count on to spit rhymes for a greater purpose is chronically unsung Flint, Michigan native Jon Connor. With an ability to out rap most, he eloquently speaks on various issues plaguing the Black community on a new track aptly titled “Rise Up.”

Another well respected lyricist and activist in Talib Kweli joins Connor over the boom-bap production. Both rappers make keen observations in their thought provoking bars; the subsequent effect is a song that provides a discourse that will make listeners, if anything, more socially aware.

“Look where were headed. N***as want baby mamas instead of weddings/ Then holla she crazy. You knew that before you got her pregnant,” exclaims Connor. And that’s just the opening line. This, struggle rappers worldwide, is what you call true emceeing.

“Rise Up” and more can be heard on Connor’s forthcoming project Unconscious State, due out on June 4. Until then, enlighten yourself to his new tune below.
