Last year’s Marvel Studios blockbuster The Avengers shattered box office predictions and cemented writer-director Joss Whedon as a visionary force in movie-making. Now, Whedon intends to take the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the small screen with the upcoming ABC series Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Debuting  this fall, a new trailer has hit the Internets and it appears a favorite character will make his screen debut as well.

For fans of the Marvel films, S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) agent Phillip “Phil” Coulson makes a triumphant return after appearing to die in The Avengers. Clark Gregg, who plays Agent Coulson, was a beloved character of the Marvel movie franchise and his revival is a mystery that will unravel itself as the series goes on.

The show is centered on Coulson and his team of agents as they serve to protect the interests of Earth’s citizens from otherworldly and supernatural forces. Joining Coulson is Agents Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Leo Fitz (Ian De Caestecker), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and others.

J. August Richards, who played vampire hunter Charles Gunn in Whedon’s Angel television series, is also featured heavily in the trailer as a hooded superhuman who rescues a woman from a building. It’s been speculated that Richards is playing the small screen version of Luke Cage although it hasn’t been confirmed by an official statement.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. debuts this fall on ABC, airing on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. ET.

UPDATE (3:36 p.m.):  Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffery Bell told IGN today that J. August Richards is not playing Luke Cage.
