Los Zetas drug cartel leader Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, also known as “Z-40” or Miguel Trevino, was captured a week ago by Mexican Marines. The Zetas have been referred to as one of the most dangerous gangs in the Mexican Drug War, and now a former assassin for the group has come forward in a new video.
Rosalio Reta, of Texas, spoke from an undisclosed prison in the state about his exposure to Trevino, and how he came to work for the Zetas when he was just a teenager in an interview conducted by the Center For Investigative Reporting.
In an excerpt from the interview, Reta shares seeing Trevino execute a man using excessive force.
“He was one of the first persons I’ve seen to cut somebody’s head off. He took his head off just by shooting him,” said Reta. “He shot two, three hundred rounds. He was telling us, ‘this is the way you kill somebody.’”
Reta, soft-spoken with tattoos on his face and arms and donned in prison whites, spoken freely about Trevino’s operation.
“Trevino was in the middle of everything,” he added. “He started trying to intimidate me and he asked me if I ever killed somebody. Me not knowing what to do and what was going on around me, I just said, ‘yes,’ but I don’t know why I said yes. And that was the first time I had to shoot somebody.”
Reta is serving time for one of the 30 killings he has claimed in service to Trevino. He is currently serving 70 years. Reta has expressed remorse for his role in the Zetas gang.
