Black Twitter is a force to be reckoned with, which can be a good or bad thing. A Twitter user accused Gawker of swiping her idea for a post. The latter didn’t take too kindly to the accusation and responded, leading to Black Twitter to band behind the former.

Various users then chimed in about ideas being routinely stolen from social media and flipped into stories by mainstream outlets, without proper credit.

Reports The Root:

There was a mild riot on Twitter earlier today after someone accused Gawker of stealing content. Three days ago, Twitter user @TheWayOfTheId tweeted a series of clever tweets taking down the flawed media fixation with black-on-black crime and collected them via Storify. On Tuesday she alleged that this piece by Gawker’s Cord Jefferson borrowed very heavily from her tweets, at the very least.

When the word “plagiarism” gets tossed around, media outlets react, as do the writers. Vitriol was hurled back and forth between members of the Black Twitter delegation and Gawker, but no real resolution seems to have been made. Different people having similar ideas isn’t all that rare. However, as far as we’ve seen, the accused writer, Cord Jefferson, has never been accused of stealing content before ( he posted a response to the situation on his Tumblr).
