The buzz for Big Sean‘s non-album track,“Control” is still going strong. After Kendrick Lamar‘s scene-stealing, game-changing verse, Hip-Hop fans have speculated on how the song came together. The Detroit rhymer breaks down the making of the song, why he released it, and what he hopes it achieves.

Big Sean sat with VIBE to discuss the record, which will not appear on his upcoming album, Hall Of Fame because of a sample clearance. The Motor City rapper kept it funky, saying that he wasn’t holding the record and truly did want it to be a part of his release.

“The fact is, we didn’t have it for a while, we had it but I wanted it to be a part of the album,” shared Sean. “But unfortunately, weak sh-t happens all the time, it happened on my first album, and this is one of the songs I really made an effort to make good.”

Sean Don also realized how big a record it was, and had his reasons for letting the uncleared record go to the public.

“I knew what it was for the culture of Hip-Hop,” Sean said of the song. “You see how excited people are, and I wanted to do that for music and make that play happen. It gave me the feeling of how Hip-Hop was, how it used to be.”

Sean also revealed that he had his verse laid down first and while he had an opportunity to change his verse after hearing K-Dot’s bars, he and Jay Electronica decided to keep their rhymes intact and referred to altering their raps as cheating.
