To say that Grand Theft Auto V is a runaway hit is an understatement. The game’s publisher, Take Two, announced today that the open world video game reached $1 billion in sales just three days after its release worldwide this past Tuesday, September 17.

“Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment,” said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick via a press statement. “We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V.”

The video game generated $800 million in sales in just 24 hours. Expect Take Two and GTAV developer Rockstar to make even more coin when next-gen versions of the game for the Xbox One and Playstation 4 console drop in 2014. Rockstar Games just released Grand Theft Audio V, which is a mixtape of the tunes found on the game Hip-Hop flavored radio station.

According to Gamespot, it took popular first person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops II a little over two weeks to reach $1 billion in sales.
