Comedian and host Steve Harvey recently recorded a candid chat with President Barack Obama for his The Steve Harvey Show program at the White House. Instead of grilling the president with hard questions about politics and the like, Harvey opted for a more relaxed approach.

Washington NBC affiliate WRC-TV caught up with the comic in their studios, where he gave preview of the upcoming interview. Despite Harvey’s own accomplishments, the “King Of Comedy” appeared humbled to have scored the interview and the pair found common ground through their family connections.

“The greatest moment in that interview for me was he was talking about his grandmother, who he misses so,” Harvey said. “She passed in her eighties and my mom passed in her eighties.”

Harvey added, “And I said to the president, ‘I heard a rumor that your mother and my mother have met, and they are on the front row watching us right now. And that was a pretty cool moment between me and the president. It kinda meant something to him too, so I felt pretty good about that.”

Harvey said he strayed away from the typical interview, focusing instead to talk with the president on a level few have before.

“I told him I wanted a man-on-man interview,” Harvey explained. “I don’t care about the politics. It’s not important to me.”

Harvey also defended the selfie photo at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela, saying the reaction to the moment was sensationalized. He also spoke about First Lady Michelle Obama’s facial expressions during the moment, saying that outsiders have no idea what Mrs. Obama could have been feeling at the moment.

The interview will air on The Steve Harvey Show on December 20.
