The year has just begun and unfortunately Spike Lee has lost a family member. His younger brother, Christopher “Shadow” Lee passed away reportedly on New Year’s Eve.

While the cause of death is unknown, the Oldboy director took a moment in to eulogize his sibling via his Instagram with a single lavender flower and the epitaph, “Mr Christopher Lee R.I.P December 23,1958-December 30,2013 Chris Is My Brother Born Right After Me.Not A Good Way To Start The New Year.May God Bless His Soul.”

Although the elder Lee went on to party in Miami with the likes of Jay Z, Beyoncé and Drake, his obligations to his family apparently still weighed on his brain. Yesterday, January 2, he posted a picture of his brother in younger days which read, “‘Memorial Services For Our Brother Christopher”SHADOW” Lee Will Be Held This Saturday January 4th 10am At The Brown Memorial Church 484 Washington Avenue Corner Of Gates Avenue In Brooklyn New York. All Chris’ Friends In The Grafitti Community Are More a Than Welcome To Attend. The Lee Family.”

With over 50 movies under his belt, the younger Lee’s biggest headline was when he had a public spat with his brother over finances regarding the pending loss of a family home. A claim that Spike later disputed, stating “I’m not the first nor will I be the last public figure who will be accused by a sibling of not doing enough. My question is, ‘When is enough enough?”
