Now here’s some MLK news that the King family doesn’t have to be ashamed of.

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart’s new comedy/action flick, Ride Along has met the approval of critics and the people have spoken out as well, allowing it to break the MLK Weekend box-office record by nearly $2 million dollars.

Via The AP:

The buddy cop tale was on track to top the mark of $46.1 million set by “Cloverfield” in 2008, and give Universal Pictures its second consecutive weekend win. The $41 million three-day opening total for “Ride Along” is the best ever in January and marks Ice Cube and Kevin Hart’s biggest as well.

And for the second week in a row, the leader spectacularly exceeded pre-release projections.

The timing turned out to be ideal for the PG-13-rated “Ride Along,” which Universal picked up in turnaround from New Line last year and is the year’s first broad comedy. It blew past analysts’ projections, which were at $30 million for the long weekend.

With the additional day to help, the Tim Story-directed film is projected to topple $50 million in ticket sales.

The news is only a glimpse of the inevitable success the two Ride Along co-stars look to enjoy in 2014. Ice Cube, who has been recently promoting the film in New York, will also star in 22 Jumpstreet before releasing his next solo album titled Everythang’s Corrupt.

Hart is gearing up to reprise his role in Think Like a Man Too which made nearly $100 million dollars on a $12 million dollar budget.
