Macklemore has been very candid in speaking on his GRAMMY wins over Kendrick Lamar in the hours following the award show. This morning, the rapper called into Hot 97 to discuss winning and the logic behind why he believes it happened.
“It’s the blessing and the curse — a little bit more the curse,” Macklemore said about beating his friend Kendrick, who he though made a better Hip-Hop album in good kid, m.A.A.d city. “What makes it awkward for me is the fact that you never want to be the person that is robbing somebody else.”
Afterwards, Macklemore explained the process of voting for GRAMMY award winners. According to the “Thrift Shop” rapper, a list of industry people and individuals on the official committee receive a ballot of the nominees that they get to vote for — he doubts most voters are truly familiar with Hip-Hop. “I got a ballot this year,” he said. “As I’m filling out the ballot, I’m realizing I don’t know much outside of the genre of Hip-Hop in terms of who should get what award.”
Taking that logic, Macklemore believes he and Ryan Lewis’ omnipresence in 2013 and a racial bias factored into them taking the highly coveted awards home. Hear him speak below.
