Jurors in Charlotte, N.C. have decided to move forward in bringing a second indictment against the cop that shot an unarmed Black man looking for help after an accident last year. Jonathan Ferrell, 24, was killed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Randall Kerrick, who was later charged with voluntary manslaughter in the case.

Last week jurors in Mecklenburg County decided not to indict Kerrick, but prosecutors took the lead of the judge who said their side could resubmit the case to a grand jury. Attorney General Roy Cooper made the move yesterday (January 27) after it was revealed that the first grand jury was missing four members. Kerrick’s defense team attempted to file a motion to block the prosecutor’s move, but Judge Robert Bell struck them down.

Ferrell, a former student-athlete at Florida A & M University was in a car accident and reportedly seeking help by knocking on random doors last September. After startling one woman, cops were called and Kerrick was one of the responding officers. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Chief Rodney Monroe claimed that Ferrell rushed the officers which prompted the cop to fire his weapon.

Kerrick, the only officer on the scene who fired his gun, shot at Ferrell 12 times with 10 bullets hitting him. Detectives in the case determined that Kerrick used excessive force. For his charge, Kerrick faces up to 11 years in jail in the case.
