Every responsible adult knows that bugdeting for food costs is just as important as keeping their lights on. And depending on the size of the family, those said expenses for nourishment can get pretty pricey.

Doug Rauch, the former president of health nut magnet grocery store Trader Joe’s has come up with a solution, albeit not the most appetizing one.

He’s opening up a store in Dorchester, Mass this spring that will specialize in stocking only expired food. It will be set up as a non-profit but it will still be a retail outlet.

Via Fox News:

Food available will include fruits and vegetables that are expired and repurposed food that will be incorporated into hot meals. Other items for sale will be products that are fine to eat but may have damaged packaging.

Dana Gunders with the Natural Resources Defense Council and co-author of the study, said that as much as 40 percent of food in the U.S. –or the equivalent of $165 billion– is wasted, thrown away to fill our landfills after spoiling in the refrigerator or pantry.

“There’s a lot of food out there that is wholesome and healthy that is just being disposed,” he explained to reporters.

Rauch is also quick to point out that “best-by or sell-by dates” don’t indicate that the product will spoil within the next 24 hours. To think that those little timestamps are responsible for $165 billion dollars is astonishing to say the least.

As long as the store meets government regulations it shouldn’t be a big deal but there is that placebo effect to be considered when it comes to most taste buds.
