Black History Month. A quaint period of time for America to acknowledge the contributions of African-Americans such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks–with a splash of racism baked in the middle.
A Northern California high school is apologizing profusely after members of their all-girl student body decided to update their cafeteria’s menu with the stereotypical (and predictable) food choices in chicken, cornbread and watermelon.
Via NBC Bay Area:
“I’d like to apologize for the announcement and any hurt this caused students, parents or community members,” Principal Nancy Libby said in the letter. “Please know that at no time at Carondelet do we wish to perpetrate racial stereotypes.”
The principal and dean held a general assembly at the school to instruct the kids, well-intentioned or not how the debacle could be potentially offensive to some.
Considering that the students are all still techinically moments, this could be considered as one as those “teachable” moments that will go to mold the thinking of a few individuals when faced with similar situations down the line.
In the end, the Black student union and the principal agreed to remove the obviously dig of watermelon off the menu because, well, everybody loves fried chicken. Check the gallery for pics of the principal’s statement.
