Our eyes are on Vince Staples, as he’s in the conversation for potential breakout artists of 2014. To answer questions on why, the Los Angeles native debuts a track titled “Nate” from his upcoming Shyne Coldchain Vol. II LP.

What Staples lacks in commercial appeal, he makes up for in natural rhyming ability and authenticity. That’s the only way to explain his approach on a track that boasts, “As a kid, all I wanted was to kill a man,” in the first line. This opens up the can of worms that is the MC’s childhood, during which he adored his incarcerated father for all the wrong reasons. Yes, this is Staples’ story, but it also has a wide range appeal.

James Fauntleroy provides an extra kick via soulful vocals over the Scoop DeVille-produced beat.

Shyne Coldchain Vol. II is the West Coaster’s first project since signing to Def Jam last year. It will don 10 tracks in total, with much of the production coming from No I.D. Jhené Aiko is the only other guest appearance.

Catch Vince Staples on ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron tour beginning March 1. Tune into “Nate” below, and peep the artwork and tracklist for Shyne Coldchain Vol. II on the next page.
