Undercover Officers In Hawaii Allowed To Have Sex With Prostitutes

Two of the world’s oldest professions are colliding in the worst way possible under Hawaiian law.

Lawmakers are looking into an exemption of a state law that gives police officers immunity from engaging in sexual intercourse with prostitutes during their “undercover activities.”

Of course members of the force are fighting to keep it place for whatever reason Jimmy McNulty claimed in The Wire.

Reports the AP:

Authorities say they need the legal protection to catch lawbreakers. Critics, including human trafficking experts and other police, say it’s unnecessary and can further victimize sex workers, many of whom have been forced into the trade.

It’s not immediately clear how often — or even if — Honolulu police have sex with prostitutes, and authorities assure legislators that internal policies and procedures are in place to prevent that scenario.

But experts say the exemption invites abuse and police can easily do their jobs without it.

The Hawaii bill that sparked the debate goes before a Senate committee Friday.

If there was ever a such thing as a “gateway law,” this would be it. Imagine police officers picketing for their right to sniff a line of blow to keep up appearances with various drug dealers.
