A Georgia woman is in police custody after her relatives turned her into authorities for circumcising her 10-month-old daughter.
Family members reported 35-year-old Melody Onyonyor to police after noticing that a piece of the child’s genitalia appeared missing during a diaper change.
A doctor examined the child at a local hospital and confirmed that there had been some kind of surgical removal of the infant’s clitoris.
Female circumcision is procedure known to take place in certain parts of Africa and Asia.
The procedure can include removal of the clitoris and clitoral hood, the removal of the labia or the closing and stitching of a woman’s vulva.
Onyonyor is facing charges of child cruelty and female genital mutilation.
