The trial began today for Celine Lesage, the French woman who admitted to prosecutors that she killed six of her newborn children and stored their decomposing bodies in plastic bags.

The children born between the years of 1999 and 2007 were discovered by her partner at the time in the basement of their apartment.

One of the murdered children was his.

When the judge asked her whether the babies were alive when she murdered them, Lesage hesitated and said “I cannot answer” before finally saying,

“Yes, your honor.”

Lesage admitted to killing two of the babies by strangling and suffocating the other four.

She says however that she lived in fear of her ex-partner who fathered five of the murdered babies, accusing him of being violent.

The man was detained by police in 2007 in connection with the crimes but was cleared of all charges.

He will testify against her later this week.

If convicted Lesage faces life in prison.
