Nigeria’s acting President made history Tuesday when he appointed a woman as the new head of the country’s oil ministry.

Goodluck Johnathan is acting President of Nigeria while President Umaru Yar’Adua remains ill and unable to fulfill his duties.

Acting President Goodluck swore in new members of the cabinet Tuesday selecting Diezani Allison-Madueke to overlook the petroleum ministry.

Madueke studied at Howard and Cambridge University and is a former employee of Royal Dutch Shell PLC, a critical oil exploration company.

Speaking to the new members of his cabinet, Johnathan says “time is of the essence” and he urged them to get to work saying,

“No minister will be allowed to go on a mission of endless search for solutions. You must hit the ground running. Time is of fundamental essence and no distraction in our mission will be tolerated.”
