NYPD Arrest Dozens Of Alleged Harlem Gang Members In Raid

NYPD officials conducted a massive raid in Harlem Wednesday morning aimed at ending a gang feud in a pair of housing projects in the borough. Although official numbers have yet to be released, police arrested dozens of alleged gang members with some unconfirmed reports saying the arrests led into the hundreds.

The New York Daily News reported on the raid, which was focused on stopping warring factions of gangs between the Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Manhattanville housing projects. The raid kicked off around 6 a.m. this morning as various gang-focused divisions of the NYPD swept the projects. Officials were hoping to nab over 100 gang members in the coordinated raid and slap them with conspiracy charges related to gang warfare.

In 2011, the shooting death of 18-year-old high school basketball star Tayshana “Chicken” Murphy was allegedly the result of a turf beef between the projects. A pair of men were convicted of murdering Murphy in separate trials with one ending just last April. The gangs have been accused of countless crimes in the area, including being linked to two murders, 20 shootings and other additional crimes.

The NYPD plan to announce an official number of those arrested some time today.
