A suspect has been arrested Wednesday night in the Brooklyn elevator stabbing case that left 6-year-old Prince Joshua Avitto dead. The suspect, 27-year-old Daniel St. Hubert, is a recent parolee who served time for attempted murder and has been charged in the stabbing death of a teenager just days before the Sunday slaying.
The police say St. Hubert, who had only been out of jail for a little over a week after serving seven years, attacked 18-year-old Tanaya Grant-Copeland in Brooklyn last Friday. The woman was stabbed 32 times and left for dead. Police were able to link St. Hubert to the Boulevard Houses stabbing in East New York based on forensic evidence found on the knife that was left at the scene. In both cases, St. Hubert reportedly used a Dura Edge by Imperial Knife which the NYPD say is no longer manufactured.
St. Hubert was arrested in Queens around 8 p.m. Wednesday. The arrest came shortly after a press conference held by the NYPD, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams staged to announce the suspect and serve as a call to the public for assistance. St. Hubert still remains a suspect in the Avitto murder, but police appear to have squarely linked him to the Grant-Copeland murder.
NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton has vowed to send a stronger police presence in the region of the stabbings during the coming summer months.
