Drake took over the ESPYs Wednesday (July 16) becoming the first music artists to do so since Justin Timberlake six years ago. This year’s ceremony played like an extended version of Drizzy’s  Saturday Night Live episode, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

His opening monologue was funny, and playfully self-deprecating. He bravely blew in Lance Stephenson’s ear, then Paul George’s ear  with Stephenson, spoke in a  British accent, transformed into Blake Griffin (scary), got curved by Skylar Diggins, and let Chris Brown’s 1930s hairdo get its proper shine in atop a nicely fitted bow tie and leather jacket ensemble.

Face it, Drizzy was putting in work last night.

The performance break was a little weird though. He shaded Macklemore’s Grammy win — six months after the fact — then launched into a song dedicated to the “Real MVPs” of the sports industry: “Side Pieces.” Also, Brian McKnight showed up to sing with Drake in a mesh hoodie and tank top. It was weird.

In the end, October’s Very Own didn’t do a bad job, and juggling an awards shows without performers isn’t exactly easy.
