We foresee big things for Long Beach, Calif. lyricist Vince Staples. After delivering his criminally slept on mixtape, Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2, he appeared Common’s “Kingdom” and another track on his Nobody’s Smiling album.

With all eyes on Staples, the promising MC returns with a new track, aptly titled “Blue Suede.” Funky synths echo in the song’s opening moment, giving listeners an early indication that this is a true West Coast party. To date, Def Jam has given Staples the green light as far as creative freedom is concerned.

The rapper’s gang ties play a major part in the cut’s DNA. He waxes poetics with precision, leaving fans to drink from the waters of dope bars and spot–on storytelling.

From his upcoming Def Jam debut, Hell Can Wait, stream “Blue Suede” below.
