A worry for many citizens, after sex offenders return to the public, is that they will engage in their activity once again after being released.
In an attempt to solve this particular issue, Gubernatorial Candidate Douglas Hughes, one of the Orange County’s Republicans, is running a campaign that promises to create a “Pedophile Island” where convicted molesters would be the population.
The location being considered is Santa Rosa Island off Santa Barbara.
Creating their own civilization, Hughes states that they would have to build their own infrastructures and could even write their own constitution.
“As governor I will introduce legislation to impose mandatory expulsion of convicted pedophiles from the State of California as a condition of release from prison,” Hughes states, according to LA Weekly.
Making the argument that pedophiles repeat their crimes once placed back in neighborhoods, Hughes feels that they should all be placed together on an island so they cannot strike on the innocent.
“Most say pedophiles cannot be treated or cured and for that reason I will put them on the ‘Island,’ a place where a male sexual offender may choose to live out his life away from children,” he writes. “Santa Rosa Island is the island that will be used as a ‘Pedophile Island.'”
Under his direction, the choices for offenders would be to leave California, stay in prison or go to the island after finishing their sentence.
