The curious circumstances surrounding the announcement of Bronx rapper Timothy “Tim Dog” Blair‘s death in 2013 were filled with controversy and mystery. Although it was speculated that the “F-ck Compton” artist faked his death to avoid paying back he swindled from a Mississippi mother, the rapper truly did pass away last year.

NBC News’ Dateline published a detailed account of the Tim Dog case, including reminding readers of the $19,000 he stole from Esther Pilgrim in 2011 and the charges of grand larceny he pleaded guilty to. Dateline originally broke the details of Blair’s scamming ways.

Pilgrim was receiving monthly payments of the court-ordered restitution, but the payments stopped. When news of Blair’s death went public and the lack of an official death record, Pilgrim began to suspect that another ruse was at play.

Dateline investigators found a Fulton County, Ga. home where Blair, his wife Alexandra and their daughter supposedly lived, but came up empty. The diligent search of the region, however, would yield potent results.

From NBC:

The clues lit up a new path suggesting Blair had been treated at Atlanta Medical Center before being discharged to Hospice Atlanta. But since the hospice could not release any information about whether Blair had been treated there – we began calling funeral homes in same zip code as the hospice, and continued widening our search until at last one funeral home confirmed a record of the hip hop artist.

Timothy Blair died at Hospice Atlanta, Dekalb County, GA on 14 February, 2013. Dateline obtained his death certificate from the Dekalb County GA Board of Health. No paperwork was filed in the county where Blair was widely believed to be living – because death records are filed in the county of death; and no one except close family, friends and carers knew where the former rapper lived – and died.

Blair, who was 46, was cremated by the County on their dime. Although NBC reported on a memorial service for Blair held last year, further details weren’t revealed.
