Sean Groubert, a South Carolina state trooper, was charged Wednesday with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature after shooting 35-year-old Levar Jones during a traffic stop.

Caught on video, the Sept.4 incident involves Jones being pulled over by Groubert at a gas station. According to WIS News 10 South Carolina, after asking Jones for his license, the 31-year-old officer fired shots at the victim as he reached into the vehicle for his wallet.

The video then shows Groubert firing repeated shots at the unarmed man; one hitting him in his hip.

“What did I do?…I just got my license, you said get my license,” screams Jones, who is currently at home recovering from his injuries after being hospitalized.

According to reports, after viewing the disturbing video, Groubert was fired by South Carolina Department of Public Safety by Director Leroy Smith on Sept. 19.

Groubert’s attorney maintains his client’s innocence and told reporters that he looks forward to his day in court, says CBS affiliate WLTX

If convicted, Groubert faces 20 years in prison. Watch the video of the shooting below.
