9 Nashville Middle Schools Suspend 50 Percent Of Black Boys [Video]

A report on the Nashville public schools system is raising eyebrows nationwide because it shows that nine local middle schools have suspended more than half of all their Black male students.

WMSV Nashville reports that one school has suspended 58 percent of its Black boys but just 10 percent of its white males.

Another middle school, Bellevue, has similar results; 58 Black boys suspended compared to 13 percent of their white counterparts.

Seven other middle schools in the area have similar results.

The Metro School Board oversees the nine schools and is facing a lawsuit from local attorney Larry Woods who says they lack adequate textbooks and resources.

Attorney Woods recently spoke out against the school board to WSMV saying,

“That’s a terrible track record. I think the entire community’s going to be shocked and surprised at these numbers…These aren’t the occasional bad kid or bad seed; they’re suspending more than half [of] their minority students.”

The news organization also reports that in Tennessee, African-Americans are four times as likely to be suspended.
On a national level they’re sent home three times more often than white kids.
